Best Practice: deutsche Corporate Blogs

Facebook’s Filter Bubble Study

A new study by Facebook employees examines what content users see and don’t see on Facebook’s news feed. The study concludes that the news feed algorithm does not keep users from seeing opinions they disagree with, so users are actually responsible for the so-called social media “filter bubble”. But after the findings were published by prominent media outlets, a number of scientists began to speak up and indicated major flaws in the study, as The Fast Company reports. The scientists argue that the study’s conclusion does suggest that the news feed algorithm hides news stories it thinks users will disagree with.

Meerkat and Periscope as Business Tools

Meerkat and Periscope are probably the most talked about things in the tech world right now. The two apps allow users to broadcast live video using their smartphones and followers to comment on the action. In an article on Medium.com Ryan Holmes sheds light on the question if and why broadcasting apps really matter. The author is certain that live streaming will not be a passing fad from a business perspective but a valuable communication tool because it is a great way to create personal attachment to a brand. The immediacy and authenticity of live streaming could also prove valuable in crisis communication as it humanizes a company and provides maximum transparency.

How Pinterest Plans to Spend its New Millions

Last week, news broke that Pinterest had raised an additional $186 million in a round of funding, raising the startup’s total funding to $1.3 billion with an $11 billion valuation. Business Insider UK talked to the co-founder of the five-year-old company and asked how Pinterest plans to grow and change in the next year. Business Insider learned that the platform will focus on international growth and on making its pins “more actionable”. Co-founder Evan Sharp also made clear that Pinterest is not a social network as it is not about sharing things with your friends but “saving ideas for the future”.

Facebook’s In-App Search Could Be Google’s Nightmare

Facebook rolled out a new feature called “Add a Link” that leads to a page where users’ queries meet with relevant results from the internet. The feature enables users to add a link that has been shared on Facebook seamlessly to their posts and comments without leaving the social network. As Wired puts it, it’s basically a Facebook in-house search engine and it has what it needs to become a potential nightmare for Google. The process of finding a story and share it with friends usually involves some app or tab switching. Accordingly, users spend lots of time outside Facebook and spend it with Google instead. Losing minutes on Google, a competitor for the mobile ad revenue, presents a significant frustration to Facebook. “Add a Link” is a reaction to the necessity to keep mobile users on Facebook.
